One Thing You Should Be Doing Now as a Dance Teacher

Stick with me on this one.

I know what you’re thinking. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, your school year is winding down. You likely have recital approaching VERY quickly. (Maybe even too quickly?)

The LAST thing you have time for is thinking about next year’s curriculum, right?

What if I told you, wrong?

Right now, you see your students every week or more. You know what’s working and what isn’t. You know what interest them. You know where they are excelling and where they are challenged.

I know SO MANY teachers and studio owners who wait until July or even August to look for new curriculums and plan out their academic year.

But when you think about what you’ll need next year, now, it can make a huge difference in how relaxing your summer can be after recital season. It can also help the beginning of your next school year start a little more smoothly!

Here are 5 reasons why you should start thinking about next year’s curriculum NOW.

1. Like I mentioned, your students’ end-of-year progress is VERY fresh in your mind. If you wait until late July to make next year’s plans or go curriculum hunting, you might find yourself trying to remember exactly how well your students left off.

2. Here’s something else that may be fresh in your mind. Were you ever trying something wasn’t quite serving you or your students like you wanted. You knew this at the close of the school year. But by time you went to plan out your year with that same curriculum or set of exercises the next year… last school year seems like a distant memory! It’s actually human nature to remember the good. (It’s usually called nostalgia!) Most of the time, this serves us well. But sometimes—when we need to be more critical in order to make changes to something from months ago, that remembering the good can actually get in the way!

3. With the school year and recital over, you can spend your summer relaxing, or with ample time for things like teaching summer camps and intensives or teacher trainings. You can give your summer to dos their full attention with the extra time you’re saving from already having your curriculum chosen and ready to go.

4. If you’re a studio owner with multiple teachers, making your curriculum choices at the end of the school year for next year will give your teachers ample time to prepare for next school year.

5. You can usually find some super early bird specials this time of year. It’s not peak buying season for dance curriculum companies, so be on the lookout for specials.
