Dance Concepts for Children: Levels

Levels are a basic dance concept that you can do so much with! Movements and poses can be done low to the floor, at a medium level, and a high level. Here are a few ideas for your preschool dance classes:

Animal Movements

Animal movements are a great way to help young children explore the concept of levels. Do your students know what animals move low to the ground (like a snake slithers)? How about ones that move really high up (like flying bird runs)?

Freeze Dance with Poses

You can also have your students pose at different levels. Freeze dance is an excellent activity for this. During the freeze portions, call out a level and have students pick a pose at that level.

Picking Flowers

Picking flowers (or berries, fruit, etc.) is a perfect free dancing activity for students to explore levels. Can they pick flowers from low levels near the ground? How about high levels like from a tree? Or perhaps they’ll pick berries from low to the ground and fruit from trees that are high up.
