Why your Dance Studio's Brand Matters

Did you know your dance studio’s brand matters? Do you know why?

Not just as a former dance studio owner myself, but also as a mama of a 3 and 5 year old, I can tell you the world of extracurricular s is WAAAAY different from when I was growing up.

At the studio where I started taking ballet, they started at age 8. (This was back in the 80’s.) Several years later, they added 5-7 year olds. Eventually they added 3-4 year olds.

At the time too, you couldn’t even audition for the company until you were 10.

TODAY… as I look at extracurricular options for my own kids, I see many programs—not just dance—starting at 15 months old. I see companies with kids as young as 5 years old performing and at competitions and conventions.

I can sign my 3 year old son up for swimming, gymnastics, soccer, T-ball, ice skating, violin lessons, and music class. For dance, we can choose among ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop.

Back to your brand…

If you’re not the only dance studio in town, then of course you have other studios to compete with.

You’re also likely to have a lot of other extracurriculars to compete with as well!

That’s why your brand matters.

There are SO MANY options when it comes to things parents can sign their kids up for.

When you have a brand that stands for something and sets your studio apart from other studios AND other extracurriculars, it can do amazing things for your enrollment.

How do you set your studio apart with branding?

1. Decide what your studio stands for. What do you want to be known for? What is your specialty? Are you a competitive dance studio? Maybe you’re a performing arts school? Or maybe you focus solely on children’s dance classes?

2. Now how are you going to relay what you stand for to your community? Choosing fonts and colors for your website and online presence is a start, but there’s a lot more to branding. Think about your messaging—your emails, your social media, how your admin staff greets and communicates with your customers. All of these things should reflect what you want to be known for as a dance studio in your town.

3. Have you made it easy for parents whose children take dance at your studio to spread the word? You’ve spread your message to your immediate community. Think about what you’d like your parents to tell their friends about your studio. Are they going to talk about your competition team? About what wonderful performing opportunities their child has? Maybe about the amazing teachers you have at your studio? How can you make it easier for them to talk about you?
