Ballet Props, Pt. 2
How to Use Props Effectively in Your Ballet Classes
Today, we continue our discussion on using props effectively in ballet class. Here are a few more tips for using props, especially in preschool and pre-ballet classes:
BE SAFE
At this point, you're probably ready to get your hands on a number of props, and that's great. But of course, it's crucial to consider safety. You wouldn't want to pick items that are likely to cause problems in the class. For the most part, stick to dance props that are sure to resonate with your students (preschoolers) and of course, ensure that they can use them freely. For example, it might be better to create rhythm sticks out of pool noodles, rather than purchasing traditional, wooden rhythm sticks for 3-year-olds to use. So take your time when choosing your props, and think your purchases through. It's as simple as that.
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PROPS
Perhaps one of the best things about props is that you can use them to better illustrate a dance step or movement; more like the ones that can help the kids become pros! So what kind of props are we looking at here? Stretchy bands can help your kids stretch as well as gain strength. Bean bags can help to teach pathways when laid out on the floor, or they can be used to reinforce good posture when placed on a student's head. All in all, do your best to use the dance props to their full potential — you'll be incredibly glad you did!
USE THEM IN A PERFORMANCE
Are your pre-ballet students doing great with the props? If yes, you won't be wrong to use them in performances. However, it's important to note that a sloppy performance can ruin the experience, so be sure that your dancers have what it takes to steal the show!
These are just a few ways to use dance props in your preschool and pre-ballet classes. Have a great time with props and your students!
