Ballet Value, Pt. 2
How to Get Parents to See the Value of Ballet Classes
Last week we covered why it's so important for parents to see value in their child's pre-ballet and beginning ballet experiences. Today's post is a continuation with tips for helping parents see the value of pre-ballet and beginning ballet for their child:
Don't wait until the end of the year to try and show the benefits of ballet.
Hold short, 5-10 minute parent observations once every 1, 2, or 3 months.
At the beginning of each month (or term between parent observations), provide a handout or email to parents with this month's objectives. Include on it objectives their child will be working on in class as well as one or two activities they can practice with their child at home. Working with their child at home will allow them to see the progress their child is making.
At the end of each month or term, invite parents to observe part of class. Be sure you cover a few of this month's objectives so parents can see the progress their children have made.
When teaching young children, we don't always teach them "real" ballet steps. If you're showing an activity that is more movement-based than ballet-based, be sure to explain to parents how the activity helps prepare their child for ballet steps later on.
Remember the value and benefits of pre-ballet and beginning ballet classes don't just encompass becoming a ballerina. Children are learning so much more that helps them OUTSIDE of ballet: interacting with other children, making friends, taking turns, following instructions, and working hard toward a goal, just to name a few.
Be sure to include sticker charts and certificates for students at the end of each month or term. This gives your students something tangible to show their progress. It gives them something to be proud of. What parent doesn't like seeing their child confident and proud?
What do you think? I'd love to hear ideas from your own experience as a dance studio owner or teacher!
